AMAR NEWS # 21 Project SEARCH Award to Caranzalem School

Auxilium High School, Caranzalem, Goa has recently been awarded the Project SEARCH – School of the year (Bronze) at Stein Auditorium, Delhi. This prestigious award is in recognition of the school being instrumental in promoting the philosophy of Project SEARCH and for setting a new benchmark for school leadership in the field of Education for sustainable Development. Project SEARCH (Sensitization, Education And Awareness on Recycling for a cleaner Habitat) was a school program initiated by TERI (the Energy and Resource Habitat) and TETRAPAK India Pvt. Ltd.

Under the project, the students learnt the importance of segregation of garbage and took it upon themselves to educate others. They visited the slums in the neighbourhood, explaining with an illustrated handout, the method of segregating dry and wet waste. Dry waste weighing 3.2 tons was collected in the school in five different bins namely: Tetra packs, paper cartons, plastic, glass and metal and non-recyclables. Children brought dry waste from their homes, went on beach cleaning drives, picked tetra packs after parties, sports day and other events. Segregation was also done in classrooms. Students were appointed as Eco-police to maintain cleanliness around the campus. Eco-club members also participated in the ‘Trash Festival’ which brought out the importance of making ‘best out of waste’.
Auxilium Caranzalem pledges to carry this movement forward to help us all move towards a GREENER AND CLEANER HABITAT.
